Essay Contest Rules: Each contestant must be given the entry form and complete rules which include information about the contest, judging, and awards. The 2021 Disability History Essay Contest is open to all High School Seniors in West Virginia. The Contest is statewide. Entries may be from any WV county and will be sorted into 6 (six) Districts following the districts delineated by the WV Division of Rehabilitation Services. Contestants must compose an original essay, with limited assistance from others (which may include typing). An essay is an analytical or interpretive literary composition. Works of fiction or poetry will not be accepted. The panel of judges reserves the right to give fewer or no awards at its sole discretion. Each contestant may submit only one essay. Multiple essays from a single contestant will be disqualified. Contestants must write on the official topic . Each entry must have a title page. The official topic; contestant’s name, address, phone number, date of birth; and name of school must be included on the title page. Essays must be typed in 12 pt. font, double-spaced, and have no more than 4 pages of content. Pages must have page numbers centered at the bottom of each page (excluding the Title Page). Essays must include factual information as well as the observations and opinions of the Contestant. Any quotations or copyrighted material must be properly referenced. Failure to reference non-original material will result in disqualification. No reference may be made in the essay identifying the student, parents, school, or community. The essay must be written in English using “People First Language” . Conference dates for 2021 are June 21-24.
Sponsored by the Freedom Forum Institute in honor of the late Al Neuharth, founder of USA TODAY and the Newseum, the goal of the program is to encourage free-spirited students to pursue a career in journalism and to emphasize the importance of the First Amendment in a democracy. Kennedy Library Foundation invites U.S. high school students to describe and analyze an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year John F. Kennedy was born. Include an analysis of the obstacles, risks, and consequences associated with the act. The essay may concern an issue at the local, state, national, or international level.
The contest is open to United States high school students in grades nine through twelve attending public, private, parochial, or home schools; US students under the age of twenty enrolled in a high school correspondence/GED program; and US citizens attending schools overseas. The first-place winner receives $10,000. Second-place receives $3,000. Five finalists receive $1,000 each. Eight semifinalists receive $100 each. Ten students receive honorable mention. Submissions are evaluated on content (demonstrated understanding of political courage, originality, supporting evidence, source material) and presentation (quality of writing, organization, conventions.) The Lions Youth Exchange Contest is now open and entries are due by November 13, 2020. The travel grant provides funds for students in grades 10-12 ages 17-21 or a recent graduate toward a four to six week cultural exchange to Finland, Japan, Italy, Peru, Germany, France or Australia during the summer of 2021. Theme: "Life in the Soil: Dig Deeper" State Contest The WV Association of Conservation District Poster Contest is modeled after the NACD Poster Contest. WVACD rules may vary slightly, so please review them carefully. District winners in each category are eligible to complete in the state contest. One poster from each district may be entered in each of the following grade categories: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. The state selects a poster for entering in each of the grade divisions and submits it to NACD. The state does not have to enter a poster for every grade level. Each entry must have the entry form filled out, signed by guardian or parent and attached to the back of the poster. Failure to do this will result in disqualification.
